Let’s talk about the importance of self-care. From the outside, it might just seem like small, mundane things we do. But in reality, it’s so much more. It’s these small gestures that allow us to take the time we need to recuperate and refocus. To remind ourselves that we deserve a break and to express self-love and appreciation. So it is extremely important to take those few minutes in a day where all you focus on is you.
Exercise is a no-brainer, but still, so many people struggle to stay motivated or even just to start. Instead of going all-in with a full-on workout program, take it step by step. Try going for a walk in your neighbourhood during your lunch break, or maybe go on a hike with friends over weekends. Personally, I found signing up for classes like yoga, works best for me. It forces me to get out of the house and moving. Now it’s reached the point where I try and incorporate a little bit of yoga in my everyday life, even if it’s just stretching in front of the TV.
Any form of exercise is beneficial for mental health. It can reduce anxiety, depression, and negative moods. Exercise can also improve your self-esteem and even helps for cognitive function.
Keeping a journal is a great way to practice self-care. By setting out a few minutes in your day to write some thoughts down can have many positive outcomes. For many, it can help to see their thoughts on a page in front of them. This might help solve a problem, for example, or make it easier to come to terms with something that has been bothering them. And on days where you don’t know what to write, force yourself to write at least three things you are grateful for. Journaling is a great way to keep yourself grounded through the chaos of the 21st century.
Figure out what time of day will bring you the most peace. Maybe set your intentions for the day during your morning coffee. Or perhaps you wish to write it out after a busy day with a glass of wine. Either way, do what works best for you!
Establishing a good nighttime routine does not only mean you should focus on your skincare. Perhaps it’s taking a long bubble bath at the end of a long day. Or making yourself a cup of tea and reading before bed. Do things at night that relaxes you so that your mind and body can reset for the next day.
The idea is to take this time and focus on yourself. Think about how your day was and what lies ahead tomorrow. Perhaps you have something nerve-wracking coming up, and by taking the time to think about it in a relaxed setting, you’ll be more at ease and prepared.
The importance of self-care goes beyond everything else. In today’s world, it feels like everything and everyone is moving at super speed. So always put your mental and physical well-being first and find out ways to appreciate yourself. Not everyone’s self-care routine will be the same, and that’s the point. As long as you keep working on yourself in whichever way works best, you’re moving forward and winning in life!
