Writing your first blog post without getting overwhelmed

When I was approached to write blog posts for Daisy Buzz I was both excited and terrified.

I’ve tried blogging numerous times in the past with very little success. I always seem to get lost in the process of writing and overwhelmed by all the technical questions surrounded by blogging.

It’s all too easy to get lost in the endless sea of possibilities. Luckily, there are ways to navigate through these challenges and it starts with concentrating on the right thing at the right time.

Forget about the bigger picture, for now.

When it comes to deciding which direction to take your blog in and which platform and layout to use, there are endless possibilities. If you haven’t figured it out yet, that’s okay. These things tend to unfold organically over time.

For something to develop however, it has to start somewhere and a blog starts with writing (and finishing) the first post.

Stop getting lost in the endless possibilities and just begin to write.

There are infinite topics to write about and there are infinite ways to get your voice across. It is downright impossible to consider all the possibilities at once. Leave the endless possibilities to float about somewhere out of sight and only approach them after giving your initial gut feeling a decent try.

Remember you can always change your blog’s focus or your writing style later. Heck, you can even pivot to something completely different. Before doing that, however, you first have to start somewhere and it’s always easier to start with what comes naturally.

Remember why you wanted to write a blog in the first place.

Why did you decide to write? Before you thought about creating a blog, what did you imagine it to look like, what was the story, memory or idea that made you want to write originally?

Maybe you wanted to share your opinion, maybe you wanted to teach or help someone with something you’ve struggled with or maybe you merely enjoy telling stories.

Take it one step at a time.

Once you’ve remembered what it was you wanted to write about in the first place, do just that. Write your first piece. Don’t overthink it, don’t over judge it and don’t worry about what you will do next. Just write.

After finishing your first piece, do the same with your second piece and then with the next. Write at least five pieces without even considering the bigger picture or the point of it all. You’re smart and you’ll figure it out when the time is right.

To not get overwhelmed is to focus on the given task at hand, setting all the infinite possibilities aside, and taking it one step at a time.
