Finding your purpose in everyday life

Only a few people know what they’re meant to do with their lives. Most of us, do not. Finding your purpose can help make your focus in life much simpler.

The rest go through life constantly wondering what their purpose is and what they’re expected to achieve in life. The questions: “What is the purpose of life?” “What am I supposed to do?” and “Why am I even here?” are nothing new, yet most of us mull them over in our heads, looking for answers while quietly going insane, or exhausting ourselves to the point of depression and/or anxiety.

It is human to have this need to know and to finding your purpose in life. We want to feel like we are meant to do something, a reason to why we’re alive in the first place. We have a tendency to think that once we find our purpose and achieve it, everything will make sense and we will be content. 

But what if you don’t have a purpose, or what if you never find it? What do you do while you’re still waiting for it to come your way?

What if I told you there is no single purpose to your life, so just go ahead and stop worrying about it?

Life isn’t one single thing, it’s a continuous flow of things, changing and adapting from day-to-day. Just as life isn’t one thing, your purpose isn’t one thing either. It’s many different things, experienced from day-to-day.

The trick is to not focus on your life’s purpose, but on the purpose of your daily activities.

The purpose of school is to learn things and form social bonds. So when you’re at school, that’s your purpose. Learn and form social bonds. 

If the purpose of your job is to find solutions to problems, then that becomes your purpose for the day. Create solutions to problems.

If the purpose of your hobby is to enjoy yourself, or to better yourself at something, then your purpose while doing that hobby is to enjoy yourself and better yourself. 

If the purpose of watching a sunset for you is to relax and marvel at nature, then you will be fulfilled by relaxing and marvelling.

The purpose of the thing you’re doing becomes your purpose, thus your purpose changes constantly throughout the day. It’s the accumulation of all these things that eventually shapes you.

Rather than setting out to find or achieve your sole purpose in life, find the purpose in your day-to-day activities. By achieving daily goals, you will feel accomplished and eventually content. Isn’t that the feeling you were craving in the first place that let to all those nagging existential questions?

Questions about life take a life-time to answer. In the meantime, do what you can to make your life meaningful at the moment.
