Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present in the moment, without judgement.
When practising mindfulness, we’re aware of our thoughts and feelings, without being caught up in them. It’s more than just meditation, it’s being able to step back and be fully present at any given time in any given situation, without letting our thoughts run wild.
Mindfulness originated in Buddhist traditions and has made a big impact in western culture over the past few decades. It became increasingly popular in the 1970s when clinical psychological and psychiatrical studies focused on the therapeutical applications of mindfulness practices on patients experiencing stress, anxiety and even those recovering from addiction. Since then, mindfulness programs have been implemented in a wide variety of fields ranging from health management, athletic performance, healthy ageing and people with special needs.
Mindfulness is a useful tool to help us become aware of unpleasant thoughts and emotions and give us the power to handle them in the moment. More important, it helps us to react with empathy to our stresses and challenges, by acknowledging them and not being overwhelmed by them.
