I just spent 8 hours binge-watching the latest Netflix original series, Firefly Lane with absolutely no context on what the show was about. Why did I watch it? Katherine Heigl of course.
The show had a bit of a slow start but portrayed a strong foundation of friendship from the get-go. Best friends, Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) venture life’s wild adventures together through thick and thin. One of the most striking themes is of Tully’s addict mother who displays what true absence and loneliness children of drug and alcoholic parents must endure as well as giving a wild insight into the making of a strong woman.
I can say that I don’t think that the show is going to win any awards, but I did enjoy the complex themes that were brought up and expressed through the season. Themes of love and hate predominantly carry the show through all of the pain, trauma and suffering looming with loyalty as well as betrayal.
The show goes back and forth in time making slow but steady progress, despite a bit of confusion here and there. Weirdly, a lot like reality. You are not really sure what is going to happen as their stories unfold.
I do feel that the characters personal development didn’t take place despite the number of years that the characters have grown. The end of season one finishes on quite a cliff hanger, but with no real understanding as to why or how.
Not a bad show. Would I watch season 2? Probably. Am I waiting on the edge of my seat? No, I wouldn’t say that.
