I have no idea why I thoroughly enjoy watching this show, 90 Day Fiancé as much as I do, but I can’t stop watching it. It must be the mindlessness of it all that ropes me in and helps me to relax as I watch hopeless romantics, also referred to as idiots in my house, fly across the world to find their soulmate.
As my partner and I watch this show we cannot believe the utterly ridiculous scenarios these people find themselves in. My partner, who firmly believes that they are actors, insists that they are purely performing the roles that they were given and that we are the suckers who are helping make more seasons because we keep watching it.
Whatever the case may be, I have stopped caring whether it’s real or not and just let it completely consume me as I go deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole. From catfishing to, wait no that’s pretty spot on. The show is a great portrayal of the multiple ways in which people can catfish someone for money, green cards and the least popular gifts.
Hardly any of the ‘characters’ depict actual relationships and every season has the same types of couples. From the ‘white trash’ old lady in love with a Nigerian man who knows absolutely nothing about the African culture and apparently has no access to Google to have read up on what Africa is really like. To the next poor bloke who has become smitten with the unattainable young and incredibly breathtaking Ukrainian or Russian could-be model.
The show is a sad reflection on the number of people who are willing to travel far and wide to find anyone who may be willing to love them. This makes me feel sad that our universal love language is one filled with insecurity and desperation to feel that we belong. Even if it means that we need to give up our entire history of everyone and everything we know to start anew elsewhere for the possibility of success and money.
Despite being completely aware of this and turning inwards as I self reflect on many of these universal themes portrayed in 90 Day Fiancé and how they are relevant in my world, here I am turning on the tv again to watch what will happen next…
