As the world around us develops we face many changes, such as climate change, resulting in the need to adapt. And we owe much of our preparation and survival to establishments such as the World Meteorological Organization. An organisation which we have paid tribute to every year since 1961, making World Meteorological Day 2022 the 62nd event of its kind.
The World Meteorological Organization
On the 23rd of March 1950 the United Nations established the specialized agency called the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). They created it to replace the previous, non-governmental International Meteorological Organization. An establishment which, since 1873, had been operating as a forum for exchanging weather data and research.
The purpose of the World Meteorological Organization was to unite the world’s knowledge in atmospheric science, climatology, hydrology and geophysics. All with the goal of contributing to the safety and wellbeing of society as a whole. And, as showcased during World Meteorological Day each year, the organisation has thus far made an essential contribution to the security of humanity.
The Theme
Every year WMO choses a new theme as a point of focus. With each theme reflecting topical weather, climate or water-related issues. The theme for World Meteorological Day 2022 is “Early Warning and Early Action”.
The ideal behind this year’s theme was to bring attention to the need for greater cooperation and coordination between authorities. Because the reality is that intense weather, climate and water extremes are becoming more frequent. And increased management of meteorological and hydrological services with disaster management authorities is crucial to being prepared and mitigating the effects of any emergencies. Therefore minimising the loss of lives as well as economic damage.
“Being prepared and able to act at the right time, in the right place, can save many lives and protect the livelihoods of communities everywhere, both now and in the future.”
